Company Profile

Our Founding and Heritage (1986–1990)

Founded in 1986 by brothers Bruce and Russell Barton, BITS Limited was built upon their extensive experience in the medical field (since 1980) and the diagnostic imaging industry (since 1984). Based originally in the New York metropolitan area, the company specialized in Technicare diagnostic imaging systems—including MRI, CT, Nuclear Medicine, and Ultrasound.

Our technical depth quickly positioned BITS Limited as the preferred installation and service provider for U.S. medical equipment brokers, driving rapid expansion that led to service work in 48 states and 28 countries within just a few years. A core differentiator from this era was our engineering ability to extend the operational life of Technicare systems long after the manufacturer ceased operations.

By developing innovative upgrades for non-FDA-regulated components like computers, memory, and storage, we kept critical imaging systems operational for more than two decades, establishing our reputation for technical excellence and reliability right from the start.

Expansion and Technical Mastery (1990–2000)

Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, BITS Limited solidified its reputation as a technical innovator by continuously developing and implementing custom hardware and software upgrades to ensure older systems remained compatible with emerging technologies.

Our expertise in solving complex challenges resulted in several key innovations: we pioneered the transition of proprietary image formats, moving them from nine-track reel-to-reel tape archives to modern CD-based and digital storage, and creating archive conversion computers to translate data into the universal DICOM standard. Furthermore, we designed virtual machines to preserve the compatibility of original OEM software, created specialized hardware like custom magnet power supplies for GE MAX MRI systems, and wrote essential diagnostic software for Picker CT scanners. This era also saw us design and sell some of the earliest PACS systems in the marketplace, underscoring our commitment to not just service, but to technical problem-solving and advancing medical imaging infrastructure.

Technological Advancements & Custom Engineering

Since 2004, BITS Limited has channeled its deep engineering expertise into successful new product innovation. This era began with the invention and patent of the Smart Strip® Power Strip, a pioneering energy-saving device that quickly became the #1 green power strip in the U.S., earning multiple awards. The product's success was immense, leading to the shipping of 40-foot containers every six weeks and making BITS Limited one of the first ten companies integrated into Amazon’s warehouse system.

Our innovative spirit continued during the COVID-19 pandemic, when we rapidly engineered and built PPE sterilization systems used by multiple hospitals to safely disinfect protective equipment, simultaneously working alongside partners to maintain critical diagnostic imaging systems at hospitals like Mount Sinai. In recent years, our focus has returned to modernizing medical facilities with specialized solutions, such as designing MRI-safe LED lighting systems that replace obsolete bulbs, ensuring clinics are modernized while strictly maintaining the electromagnetic compatibility required by sensitive MRI scanners.

New Product Development & Critical Response (2004–Present)

With nearly four decades of experience, BITS Limited remains a trusted and vital name in diagnostic imaging equipment service, installation, engineering, and innovation. From our foundational roots in extending the life of Technicare systems to our present-day global reach and commitment to future technologies like MRI-safe LED lighting, we continue to exemplify technical excellence, reliability, and a passion for advancing medical technology worldwide.

Our history of pioneering solutions, critical healthcare support, and successful product development ensures that BITS Limited is poised to meet the complex needs of the global medical community for decades to come.
